Another great white shark spotted killing, eating seal off Maine coast: ‘Be prepared for some graphic images’

-

Another great white shark has been spotted chomping on a seal off the coast of Maine.

The apex predator was seen killing and eating a seal off Whitehead Island Lighthouse in Maine earlier this week.

“Another white shark predation on a seal off Maine,” tweeted MA Sharks, run by Massachusetts-based shark expert John Chisholm, who also confirms sightings for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Sharktivity app. “Thanks to #citizenscientist Sue Fontaine for reporting it.

“You can see her photos at the link below,” he added. “!! WARNING !! before you click the link, be prepared for some graphic images.”

While Cape Cod is usually the focus of shark activity this time of year, Maine has been a hotbed of apex predator activity in the last week.

Only a few days before this shark feasted on a seal, a spotter saw a great white shark bite a seal in half off Pemaquid Point in Bristol — which is about 30 miles south of Whitehead Island Lighthouse.

A few other shark sightings have been reported off of Maine so far this month.

A tagged 12-foot white shark pinged off Harpswell’s Bailey Island, where a woman was killed by a shark two years ago. It was the state’s first reported deadly shark attack in its history.

Those in Maine who see a white shark can send in their sightings to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Sharktivity app, and they also can submit it to the Maine Department of Marine Resources white shark sighting page.
