The ex-boyfriend of a missing Massachusetts woman, whose dead body was found in her truck in Vermont Tuesday, was shot and killed by police during a standoff following a multi-state manhunt.
Matthew Davis, 34, of Fitchburg, was “fatally shot” during a confrontation with Vermont State and Brattleboro police during a confrontation in West Brattleboro Tuesday night, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Davis was wanted for questioning after the body of Mary Anderson, 23, of Harvard, Mass., was found in her truck Tuesday. She was reported missing over the weekend. Police identified Davis as an ex-boyfriend of Anderson and said Tuesday he was wanted for questioning in her death.
Davis was sought by police in multiple states as they noted he had ties to Fitchburg and Pittsfield in Massachusetts.
Davis was armed with a knife when a detective encountered him during a search of a wooded area between Bonnyvale Road and South Street in West Brattleboro, according to Vermont state police.
Additional members of the Vermont state and Brattleboro police rushed to the area.
Davis was killed in the confrontation after two Vermont troopers and a Brattleboro police officer fired their weapons, according to a release from the Vermont state police.
Police rendered medical aid and called EMS, but Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The knife was found near his body. There were not other injuries reported. Two troopers from the Massachusetts state police were also in the area, according to the release.
Investigators with the Vermont state police remain at the scene of the shooting Wednesday morning.
In accordance with department procedures, the fatal shooting of Davis is under investigation by Vermont state police.
